12 Fun & Festive Crochet Christmas Appliques

I’m so excited to kick off this year’s 12 Days of Crochet Christmas and this time we’re doing something a little different. From the 1st-12th of December, we’ll be making a collection of crochet gift tags featuring brand-new crochet Christmas appliques.

Why Crochet Gift Tags?

Christmas is a busy time of year, so this crochet-along is designed to fit into the holiday hustle – one gift tag base pattern and twelve small appliques that you can mix, match and personalise however you like.

Each pattern uses only a small amount of yarn, making this a great stash-busting project and an easy way to enjoy a daily dose of festive crochet without a big time commitment.

You can follow along day by day, save them for later or make a whole coordinated set in one cosy weekend, whatever works for you.

get started

No need to wait, get a head start on your gift tags using this easy crochet gift tag pattern.

Gift tags not your thing? No worries! These appliques are super versatile, you can use them to embellish stockings, personalise blankets, cushions and clothing, create greeting cards or turn them into festive magnets, brooches or ornaments.

What Supplies Do You Need to Make Crochet Christmas Appliques?

I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK with a 2.5mm crochet hook for my appliques which is a light worsted/8 ply yarn. However, these patterns are a great way to use up yarn scraps so I encourage you to use what you have.

Additional supplies include: two pairs of 5mm black safety eyes, fabric glue or hot glue as well as a 10mm gold star.

I used fabric glue to attach most of my pieces to the gift tags. Not only does this eliminate the need for sewing, but it also keeps the back looking neat.

If you’d prefer to sew the pieces on, I recommend using invisible thread.

Assembling Your Gift Tags

When it comes to assembling your crochet Christmas appliques and gift tags, here are some helpful tips:

  • If using fabric glue, apply to the pieces with a small paintbrush or cotton bud/q-tip for better precision.
  • Tweezers can be helpful to place smaller pieces.
  • Use the finished image as reference for placement.
  • Use a sharp embroidery needle when adding details such as French knots.
