Crochet Robin Applique Pattern

Instantly recognisable with it’s brown and red colouring, this crochet robin might just be my favourite applique yet!

It’s Day 8 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas!

If you’re crocheting along and haven’t done so already, you’ll want to whip up an easy crochet gift tag to attach your applique to.

About the Pattern

This crochet robin applique pattern is worked in the round with the body and belly crocheted separately.

I used a pair of 5mm safety eyes with the shafts removed and some yellow yarn for the beak. Alternatively, you could use beads, simple embroidery or French knots.

I used fabric glue to assemble my crochet pieces and hot glue to attach the eyes.

Finished Size

The finished applique measures approximately 1.25″ x 1.75″ (3.5cm x 4.5cm) including the wings. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in joined rounds unless otherwise specified. The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Work the first stitch of the next round in the same stitch as joining.

Pattern Instructions

Robin body (brown)

Make a magic ring.

R1: Ch 1, 10 hdc in magic ring, sl st to first hdc to join (10)

R2: Ch 2, [dc-inc] x10 (20)

R3: Sl st in first dc to join and next 4 sts, ch 3, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in last ch, 10 sl st back on body, ch 3, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in last ch, 5 sl st back on body (20 + 2 wings)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Belly (red)

Make a magic ring

R1: Ch 2, 10 dc in magic ring (10)

Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.

Finishing

  • Glue the belly to the body positioning it so that the top of it sits over the centre of the magic ring and the bottom sits just above the bottom of the body.
  • Trim the shafts off the safety eyes making them as flush with the back of the eye as possible (I used a pair of side cutters to do this). Glue them on R2 of the body, approximately 2 stitches apart and touching the top of the belly. Alternatively, you could embroider eyes or use beads.
  • Using yellow yarn, sew a small beak between the eyes going over the belly. I used 3 stitches to create a triangle shape.
  • Cut a piece of brown yarn. Fold it in half and pull the folded end through a stitch at the centre top of the robin (I use my crochet hook to grab it and draw it through). Pull the tails through the loop and tighten. Trim to your desired length and separate the ends a little bit to fluff them up.
