Easy Crochet Gift Tag Pattern
Add a handmade touch to your gifts with this crochet gift tag pattern. They work up quickly, use only a small amount of yarn and instantly make any gift feel more personal.

Whether you’re prepping for the holidays, a special birthday or your next market, these tags are a fun way to level up your packaging. Plus, they’re fun to customize for different occasions and you can use them as luggage tags or bookmarks.
About the Pattern
This crochet gift tag is worked in turned single crochet rows and finished by crocheting evenly around the sides.
We’ll be skipping stitches at the edges that will act as decreases and shape the top of the tag and creating a small chain space for threading through a length of yarn or twine so it can be attached to gifts.
Recommended Yarn
You can make larger or smaller gift tags by using different weight yarns and adjusting your hook size.
For this pattern, I’ve used DK weight yarn with a 2.5mm hook.

How to Use Crochet Gift Tags
- Attach them to gift bags, boxes, wrapped gifts or jars.
- Add them to market packaging for a branded, handmade touch.
- Use as reusable tags for holiday stockings.
- Create themed sets for seasonal gifts.
- Use as luggage tags when traveling.
- Turn into a bookmark by adding a longer tie to slip between the pages.
Tips for Customising
- Use colours to match different occasions and seasons.
- Decorate with small appliques, themed buttons and other embellishments.
- Embroider with the recipients initials.
- Use embroidery floss, beads and sequins for finer details.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.
Notes
- The gift tags are worked in turned rows starting with a ch 1.
- We’ll be skipping stitches instead of using decreases.
- Blocking is recommended.
Pattern Instructions
Gift Tag
R1: Ch 11, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across (10)
R2-12: Ch 1, turn. [Sc] x10 (10) 11 rows
R13: Ch 1, turn. Sk 1, 7 sc, sk 1, sc (8)
R14: Ch 1, turn. Sk 1, 5 sc, sk 1, sc (6)
R15: Ch 1, turn. 2 sc, ch 2, sk 2, 2 sc (4 sc + 2 chs)
R16: Ch 1, turn. Sk 1, sc, 2 sc in ch-sp, sk 1, sc (4)
Do not turn. Place 2 sc in the same stitch as the last sc from R16, sc evenly around the 3 sides placing 3 sc in each of the two bottom corners and finishing with 2 sc in the top corner.
Fasten off invisibly to the first single crochet from R6. Weave in ends.
Gently stretch and manipulate the stitches so that the tag lies flat and looks evenly shaped.
Blocking (optional)
Blocking is not strictly necessary for this project but it will help to fix any curling or twisting and help the tags to lie flat.
Materials required for blocking:
- Blocking mat
- Rust proof pins
- Spray bottle filled with water
Pin your crochet gift tags to the blocking mat in an even shape. (I wasn’t overly concerned with making sure that they were all the same size so I only pinned them at the top and bottom and gently stretched them into shape as needed).
Spray with water until damp and leave to air dry completely.

Tip:
If don’t have a blocking mat, layer some glad wrap/plastic wrap on carpeted floor.
Finishing
Add a tie to the gift tag by cutting a 12″/30cm length of yarn or twine. Fold it in half and pull the folded end through the chain 2 space (I use my crochet hook to grab it and draw it through). Pull the tails through the loop and tighten.

Decorate as desired.
