Crochet Bear Applique Pattern
This little crochet bear applique is sweet and simple.

It’s Day 2 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas!
If you’re crocheting along and haven’t done so already, you’ll want to whip up an easy crochet gift tag to attach your applique to.
This crochet bear applique is quick and easy. Use it to embellish clothing or accessories, make greeting cards, mini garlands, ornaments, brooches or magnets. Think baby’s first Christmas/birthday or nursery decor – there are so many possibilities!
About the Pattern
This crochet bear applique pattern is worked in the round with the head and muzzle crocheted separately.
For the facial details, I used a pair of 5mm safety eyes with the shafts removed and a 5-wrap knot for the nose. Alternatively, you could use beads, simple embroidery or French knots.
I used fabric glue to assemble my crochet pieces and hot glue to attach the eyes.

Finished Size
The finished applique measures approximately 1.25″ x 1″ (2.5cm x 3cm) including the ears. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.
Gauge
Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.
Notes
- The head is worked in joined rounds. The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Work the first stitch of the next round in the same stitch as joining.
- The muzzle is worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring.
- The ears are worked in the front loop of the double crochet and the upper side loop.

Wrap Knots
How to make a 5-wrap knot for the bear’s nose:
- Cut a length of yarn (approximately 6″/15cm) and cross one end over the other to make a loop.
- Pass one end of the yarn through the loop as if tying a knot.
- Repeat step 2 a further 4 times.
- Slowly pull both ends of the yarn. The loops will start to align and shrink down into a knot – avoid pulling the knot too tight.
- Use the yarn ends to secure the knot to your piece.

Pattern Instructions
Head (brown)
Make a magic ring.
R1: Ch 1, 10 hdc in magic ring, sl st to first hdc to join (10)
R2: Ch 2, dc-inc in same st, [dc-inc] x2, dc in next st, ch 1, (3 sc, sl st in front loop and side loop of the dc), dc in same st as last dc, [dc-inc] x2, dc in next st, ch 1, (3 sc, sl st in front loop and side loop of the dc), dc in same st as last dc, [dc-inc] x3 (20 dc + 2 ears)
Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.
Muzzle (beige)
R1: 5 sc in magic ring (5)
R2: [Inc] x5 (10)
Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.
Nose
Using black yarn, make a 5-wrap knot and sew it at the top of muzzle. Alternatively, sew a nose using horizontal stitches.
Finishing
- Glue the muzzle to the head positioning it so that the top of the muzzle sits over the centre of the magic ring and the bottom sits just above the bottom of the head.
- Trim the shafts off the safety eyes making them as flush with the back of the eye as possible (I used a pair of side cutters to do this). Glue them between R1 and R2 of the head, approximately 2 stitches apart and touching the top of the muzzle. Alternatively, you could embroider eyes or use beads.
- Thread a length of red yarn through a couple of stitches centred at the bottom of the head underneath the muzzle. Tie in a bow and trim ends.
