Crochet Santa Sack Ornament Pattern

How cute is this crochet Santa sack ornament pattern complete with little bear?!

Crochet Santa sack with miniature bear sticking out sitting on a square brown paper wrapped present.

It’s Day 7 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas! Bears are a classic when it comes to toys so it was the perfect choice for this crochet Santa sack ornament.

About the Pattern

The pattern is worked in two pieces – the bear and the Santa sack.

The bear is no-sew and we’ll be using bobble stitches worked in the front loops only for the ears, arms and legs.

The Santa sack is worked in a continuous spiral with some added chain spaces for the tie to be woven through at the end.

Finished Size

The finished Santa sack ornament measures approximately 2″ tall x 1.75″ wide (5cm x 4.5cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.
  • The bobble stitches on the bear are worked in the front loop only.

Pattern Instructions

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)

R11: 4 sc, FLO bo, 4 sc, FLO bo, 2 sc (12)

R12: [Sc, invdec] x4 (8)

Cut the yarn leaving a tail and pull through last st. Weave the yarn tail through the front loops only of the final round and pull to close. Hide the end inside the bear.

Finishing

  • Using 2 strands of black embroidery floss, sew the bears eyes over R5 approximately 3 sts apart. Sew over the eye 4-5 times or until you have your desired look.
  • Still using black embroidery floss, sew a nose centred between the eyes between R5 and R6, 1 st long. Sew over it 2-3 times or until you have your desired look. Make a single horizontal st down from the centre of the nose over R6.
  • Tie some yellow yarn or twine in a bow around the bears neck. Trim ends.

Toy Sack (red)

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)

R2: [Inc] x6 (12)

R3: [Sc, inc] x6 (18)

R4: Sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x5, sc (24)

R12: 2 sc, invdec, [4 sc, invdec] x5, 2 sc (30)

R13: [Sc] x30 (30)

R14: [Ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st] x 15 (15 ch spaces + 15 sc)

In the next round you will be working into the ch spaces and the sc sts from the previous round.

R15: [Sc, inc] x15 (45)

R16: [Sc] x45 (45)

Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.

Using white yarn and starting at the front of the sack, weave the yarn in and out of the ch spaces from R14, finishing by bringing it out of the same space where you went in.

Place the bear in the sack so that only it’s head and neck are exposed and use the sack ties to cinch closed to secure.

Tie a knot at the end of each tie at the length that you’d like your tie to be and trim excess yarn.

Hanging

I chose to use some wire to attach this ornament to my tree.

I inserted the wire through the bottom of the sack, 3 rounds on each side of the magic ring, so that it can be twisted together around a branch.
