Yule Log Crochet Pattern

It’s Day 6 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas! Which means that we’re half way already!

Miniature food is always so cute and this little yule log cake ornament looks good enough to eat.

About the Pattern

This yule log crochet pattern is worked in turned rows. You’ll be creating a long rectangle which is then folded and rolled up to create our log.

The holly and berries give it the perfect festive touch.

Yule Log Crochet Pattern

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in dark brown, white, dark green and red (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Coffee Bean, Paper White, Racing Green and Pillar Red)
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn/twine for hanging
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round

Special Stitches

Puff stitch: [Yarn over, insert hook in st, yarn over and pull through] x3, you should have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Ch 1 to close the st.

Finished Size

The finished bell measures approximately 2.25″ (6cm) long. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.

Notes

  • The yule log is worked flat in turned rows.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

Pattern Instructions

Yule Log (starting with dark brown)

Leave a long starting tail of approximately 20cm for sewing.

R1: Ch 15, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across (14)

R2-26: Turn, ch 1. [Sc] x14 (14) 25 rowschange colour to white in last st of R26

R27-40: Turn, ch 1. [Sc] x14 (14) 14 rows

Fasten off and weave in end.

Berry Cluster (red)

[Ch 2, puff st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in same ch] x3 (3 puff sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Holly Leaf (green)

Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch. Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st back into same ch as sc. Sl st in next ch, sc in next. Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sl st back into same ch as sc. Sl st in next 2 chs. Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st back into same ch sl st.

Working down other side of the chain – sl st in next ch. Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st back into same ch as sl st. Sl st in next 2 chs. Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st back into same ch as sl st. Sl st in next 2 chs.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

  • Fold the white section of the yule log onto the brown section leaving 6 rows of dark brown showing. Roll together tightly from the folded end and pin in place. Use the long starting tail to sew down the edge.
  • Sew the holly leaf to the top of the yule log.
  • Sew the berry cluster to the yule log overlapping the edge of the holly leaf.
  • Attach a hanging loop.
