Hot Chocolate Ornament Crochet Pattern

Day 12 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas is a little hot chocolate ornament crochet pattern.

This hot chocolate ornament crochet pattern is quick and easy with minimal sewing and the Santa belly mug gives it the perfect festive touch.

Hot Chocolate Ornament Crochet Pattern

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in red, dark brown, black, white and a small amount of yellow (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Pillar Red, Coffee Bean, Pure Black, Paper White and Mustard Yellow)
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Thin cardboard (cereal box, tissue box, etc)
  • Yarn/twine for hanging
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase
  • BLO – back loop only
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round

Finished Size

The finished hot chocolate measures approximately 1.75″ (4.5cm) tall. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.

LET’S GET STARTED!

Hot Chocolate (dark brown)

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)

R2: [Inc] x6 (12)

R3: [Sc, inc] x6 (18)

R4: Sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x5, sc (24)

R5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)

R6: 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x5, 2 sc (36)

Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.

Optional: Using white yarn, surface sl st outwards from the centre stopping at the end of R5.

Mug (red)

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)

R2: [Inc] x6 (12)

R3: [Sc, inc] x6 (18)

R4: Sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x5, sc (24)

R5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)

R6: 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x5, 2 sc (36)

Trace around your piece onto some cardboard. Cut out and set aside.

R7: BLO [sc] x36 (36)

R8-11: [Sc] x36 (36) 4 roundschange to black in last st of R11

R12-13: [Sc] x36 (36) 2 roundschange to red in last st of R13

R14-17: [Sc] x36 (36) 4 rounds

Using yellow yarn, surface sl st the belt buckle to the front over R12 and R13 (black rounds), 3 sts long x 2 sts wide.

Place card in the bottom.

Start stuffing and continue to stuff as you go.

R18: Join the hot chocolate to the mug by crocheting through both pieces. [Sc] x36 (36)

R19: [Sl st] x36 (36)

Fasten off invisibly and weave in end.

Handle (red)

Ch 12, starting in the second ch from hook, 2 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 2 sc (13)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly

  • Sew the handle to the side of the mug.
  • Attach a hanging loop.
