Day 5 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas is a fun little candy ornament crochet pattern.
These candies are so quick and easy to make. Whip up a bunch for the tree or fill a bowl for a cute centrepiece.
The instructions below are for the red and white striped candy but they would look equally cute in solid colours. Oh and did I mention that they’re no-sew? Just a few pesky ends to weave in.
(Contains Affiliate Links)
- DK Weight Yarn in your choice of 2 colours (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Paper White, Pillar Red and Evergreen for the candies pictured)
- 2.5mm crochet hook
- Metallic embroidery floss or contrasting yarn for trim (I used DMC E703 (green) and DMC E3852 (gold))
- Polyester fiberfill
- Yarn/twine for hanging
- Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- inc – increase
- invdec – invisible decrease
- BLO – back loop only
- sl st – slip stitch
- st/s – stitch/es
- […] – repeat the instructions in brackets
- (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round
The pattern is written using US terminology and measures approximately 2.5″ (6.5cm) long when using the materials listed.
Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.
All colour changes take place in the last yarn over of the previous colour.
CANDY (starting in red)
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: BLO [inc] x6 (12) – change to white in last st
R3: [Sc, inc] x6 (18)
R4: Sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x5, sc (24) – change to red in last st
R5-6: [Sc] x24 (24) – change to white in last st of R6
R7-8: [Sc] x24 (24) – change to red in last st of R8
R9-10: [Sc] x24 (24) – change to white in last st of R10
R11: Sc, invdec, [2 sc, invdec] x5, sc (18)
Start stuffing and continue to stuff as you go.
R12: [Sc, invdec] x6 (12) – change to red in last st
R13: [Invdec] x6 (6)
Fasten off and close by weaving the yarn tail through the back loops only.
CANDY ENDS (red)
Join yarn in the first leftover front loop from R2 by inserting your hook and pulling through a loop of yarn.
R1: Ch 1, sc in same st. [Sc] x5 (6)
R2: [Inc] x6 (12)
R3: [Sc] x12 (12)
R4: [Sc, inc] x6 (18) – change to metallic embroidery floss or contrasting yarn in last st
R5: [Sl st] x18 (18)
Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.
Repeat on the other side using the leftover front loops from when we closed up the end.
With the front facing you (colour changes should be on the back), slightly flatten each candy end and tie a piece of white yarn around the base. Tie in a bow and trim ends.
If intended as a hanging ornament, attach a hanging loop to the middle of the candy.
