Elf Door Ornament Crochet Pattern

Add some Christmas magic with this fun elf door ornament crochet pattern.

Red and yellow crochet door with candy cane border adorned with a Christmas wreath.

It’s Day 8 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas! I love everything about this ornament, from the little wreath to the candy cane border, it just makes me smile.

About the Pattern

This elf door ornament pattern is quick and easy. The door is made up of half double crochet stitches and finished with a single crochet border.

The wreath is made separately and glued in place. However, I recommend sewing it on if the ornament will be within reach of small children.

To keep things simple, the instructions are for the yellow door but have fun experimenting with different colour combinations.

Notes

  • The door is worked in an arch starting with a chain.
  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each hdc row does not count as a stitch.
  • Colour changes take place in the last yarn over of the previous colour.

Pattern Instructions

Door (yellow)

R1: Ch 12, hdc in third ch from hook and next 8 chs, 5 hdc in last ch. Working down other side of ch – [hdc] x10 (24)

R2: Ch 2, turn. [Hdc] x10, [hdc-inc] x5, [hdc] x9 (29)

R3: Ch 2, turn. [Hdc] x10, inc, [hdc,inc] x4, [hdc] x9 (34)

Border (starting with red)

This round is worked alternating colours. So you will work 1 red sc, 1 white sc, 1 red sc, 1 white sc, etc.

All colour changes take place in the last yarn over of the previous colour. Try and keep your stitches a little looser than normal.

Join yarn in the back loop only with a standing sc and change to white in last yarn over, BLO [sc] x33 (34)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Gently stretch and shape the door until it lies flat and even. If it continues to curl, you might want to block it.

Wreath (green)

R1: 8 sc in magic ring (8) – don’t pull the ring closed all the way. You want to leave a hole for the centre of the wreath.

R2: Sl st in first sc, ch 1, sl st in same st. [Ch 1, sl st in next st] x7

Fasten off leaving a long tail if you want to sew the wreath on otherwise weave in ends.

Thread some red yarn through a couple of sts from R1 and tie in a bow. Trim ends.

Finishing

  • Using dark brown yarn, make 2 sts side by side for the door handle, 2 hdc sts long and 6 sts up from the bottom of the door.
  • Glue or sew the wreath to the door centred over R1 and R2.
  • Attach a hanging loop to the top of the door.
