Welcome to Day 1 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas! We’re getting things underway with a cute little crochet candy cane applique.

About the Pattern

This crochet candy cane applique pattern consists of a single row and takes less than 5 minutes to make.

We’ll be changing colours every 2 stitches and using increases to create the curve. There’s no need to cut the yarn each time, simply drop it to the back and pick up the previous colour.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in red (r) and white (w) (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Pillar Red and Paper White)
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • inc – increase
  • sc – single crochet
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round

Finished Size

The finished applique measures approximately 1.75″ (4.5cm) long. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.

Notes

  • Colour changes take place in the last yarn over of the previous colour. Do not cut the yarn, pick up each colour as needed.
  • Change colour every 2 stitches, colour abbreviations in brackets.

Pattern Instructions

Candy Cane (starting with red)

R1: Ch 15, inc in the second ch from hook (r), inc (w), inc (r), inc (w), inc (r), inc (w), 2 sc (r), 2 sc (w), 2 sc (r), 2 sc (w) (20)

Fasten off and weave in ends.
