Simple Crochet Wreath Pattern

Wreaths are a staple when it comes to Christmas decor. Whether it’s adorning your front door, a cozy corner or part of a festive centerpiece, this simple crochet wreath will add the perfect touch of handmade charm to your space.

My intention with this design was to create a plush, textured wreath that could be used as a base pattern for adding your own creative flare to. It also needed to be quick and relatively simple.

Gimme That Texture

The easiest way to add texture to a project is with a textured stitch. The loop stitch is perfect for this and (at least for this crochet wreath) it doesn’t matter if all of your loops are the same size or not as it just adds to the handmade charm.

If you’ve been intimidated by loop stitch in the past, don’t be! Traditionally the loop stitch is worked in the back. However, working it in the front allows you to actually see what you’re doing and have better control over your loops.

Below is a short video showing you by far the easiest method that I’ve found for working the crochet loop stitch.

Although I haven’t tested it, it should also work the traditional way so feel free to use your preferred method.

How to Crochet a Christmas Wreath

This crochet wreath is worked around a metal ring which gives it structure and a round uniform shape.

It works up quickly using plush yarn, which when combined with the loop stitch, adds fullness and texture with minimal effort.

I did not add a hanging loop as it hangs well from the centre. However, you could crochet a small chain loop to hang it from before fastening off or add a small loop to the back with a piece of yarn.

A hand holds a green crochet wreath made of plush loopy stitches, featuring a red bow at the bottom.

How to Customise Your Crochet Wreath

I kept mine simple with a classic red bow. However, decorating is half the fun! Here are some ideas for embellishments/decorations that you can add to really make it your own:

  • Buttons, beads or sequins
  • Bells
  • Pompoms
  • Pinecones
  • Crochet leaves, flowers, appliques or small ornaments
  • Fairy lights
  • Ribbon (experiment with size and texture)

Can This Crochet Wreath Be Made in Different Sizes?

While I haven’t tested it, I don’t see why not.

If you’re an experienced crocheter and willing to do a bit of math, then this wreath can be made bigger or smaller simply by using a different size metal ring.

To make it easier, keep your stitch count to a multiple of 8.

If you use a smaller ring you’ll need less stitches around the ring and maybe even less rounds depending on how full you want your wreath to be.

For a larger wreath, you may want to add extra rounds. However, this may make your wreath less structured so you might want to consider adding some kind of reinforcing to the back such as card or stiffened felt.

Finished Size

The finished wreath measures approximately 8″ (20.5cm) across. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.

Notes

  • R1 is worked around a metal ring.
  • The wreath is worked in a continuous spiral without joining. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.

How to Crochet Around a Ring

Place a slip knot on your hook. Position the working yarn and tail end behind the ring. Insert hook through the center of the ring from front to back. Yarn over and pull back through the center (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through both loops, first single crochet made. Continue to single crochet around the ring.

Tip: Hold the tail end next to the ring and crochet over it as you go.

Pattern Instructions

Wreath (green)

R1: Starting with a slip knot on your hook, crochet around the metal ring – [sc] x64 (64)

R2: [7 lpst, lpst-inc] x8 (72)

R3: 4 lpst, lpst-inc, [8 lpst, lpst-inc] x7, 4 lpst (80)

R4: [9 lpst, lpst-inc] x8 (88)

Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.

Bow (red)

For the bow, I followed a really easy video from Briana K Designs on YouTube to make a crochet i-cord.

I made my cord approximately 16.5″ long.

Tie in a bow and glue or sew in place at the bottom of the wreath. Weave in ends.

Tip: If sewing, use green yarn (DK weight or worsted) that’s the same colour as your wreath.
