It’s Day 12 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas!

Gnomes have steadily been gaining in popularity over the years and I totally get it, they’re whimsical, fun and perfect for any season or occasion.

I wanted this little crochet Christmas gnome to feel extra festive so I made his hat to mimic a Christmas tree and added French knots for the ornaments. Of course, you can use whatever colours and embellishments you like to make it your own.

About the Pattern

The pattern is worked in 3 separate pieces; the hat, beard and nose.

The hat uses a combination of single crochet and half double crochet stitches with some rounds worked in the third loop. This gives the hat a fun ribbed look.

The beard is a simple tassel made from worsted weight acrylic yarn for extra fullness.

I added some French knots to the hat for the ornaments and finished it off with a small gold bell.

Finished Size

The finished gnome ornament measures approximately 5″ (10.5cm) long not including the bell. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.
  • R6, R9, R12 and R15 of the hat are worked in the third loop.

Identifying the Third Loop in Half Double Crochet

If you look at the top of your work, you’ll see the front loop and back loop of each stitch. Tip your work towards you and you’ll see an extra bar behind each stitch. This is the third loop.

R3: [Sc] x12 (12)

R4: [BLO dec] x6 (6)

Do not stuff. Cut the yarn leaving a tail and pull through last st. Weave the yarn tail through the front loops only of the final round and pull to close. Hide the end inside the nose.

Beard (white worsted weight yarn)

Wrap yarn 30 times around your piece of card (see materials for size).

Using a yarn needle, thread a long piece of yarn (approximately 30cm) that’s the same colour as the gnome’s hat, under the strands at one end and tie it tightly at the top edge of the card.

Gently slide the yarn off the card and cut the bottom strands to create a tassel.

Assembly

  • Thread the long tails at the top of the beard onto a yarn needle and bring them through the centre of the magic ring at the top of the hat. Keep gently pulling the tails until the beard is snug inside the hat.
  • Thread a gold bell onto one of the tails and tie together to secure. Knot the two tails together in the length desired for your hanging loop. Trim ends.
  • Using yellow and red yarn, sew French knots on the hat to mimic tree ornaments. Alternatively, instead of French knots you could use sequins, beads or small buttons.
  • Attach the nose by using a yarn needle to thread one of the centre strands of the beard through the back of the nose. Slide the nose into place and secure with glue. The centre of the magic ring should sit just under the edge of the hat.
  • Trim the beard if desired.
