It’s Day 11 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas!

I knew after making the Nutcracker ornament that I wanted to make a Sugar Plum fairy one as well. They really do make the sweetest pair and add in the mouse ornament from last year and you have a beautiful set inspired by The Nutcracker Ballet.

A hand holding three crocheted ornaments: a gray mouse with holly leaf and berry, a soldier in a black hat with a white moustache and the sugar plum fairy with light purple hair and pink cheeks, wearing a gold crown.

About the Pattern

This crochet Sugar Plum Fairy ornament starts with a simple bauble base.

The hair, bun, crown and cheeks are worked separately and sewn on at the end along with some extra detail added to the bun.

Finished Size

The finished Sugar Plum Fairy ornament measures approximately 2.25″ tall x 2″ wide (6cm x 5cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.

Assembly

  • Using skin colour yarn, sew a nose centred between the eyes between R12 and R13. Make 2 horizontal sts and wrap yarn evenly along the length by going over and under the 2 sts.
  • Place the hair on the head. Sew the bun to the hair using the leftover front loops from R5 of the hair and the front loop only of the bun. Add some stuffing when you’re about 3/4 of the way around. Avoid over stuffing.
  • Sew the hair to the head.
  • Sew cheeks to the side of the eyes over R13 and R14.
  • Thread some yellow yarn onto a yarn needle and wrap it around the leftover back loops from sewing on the bun by going over and under. Alternatively, you could tie a piece of yellow yarn around the bun.
  • Sew the crown in front of the bun with the centre ‘spike’ inline with the nose.
  • Attach a hanging loop to the front of the bun.
