This crochet peas in a pod pattern has previously only been available as a paid pattern so I’m excited to finally bring it over to the blog and share it with you for free.

The pattern works up quickly with super bulky yarn and the peas are removable adding another layer of fun. It’s perfect for gifts, nursery decor and photo props.

About the Pattern

This crochet peas in a pod pattern is worked in separate pieces using basic stitches with minimal sewing.

The pod is worked around a chain to create an oval base. The ends are pinched together and sewn in place to give it that classic pea pod look.

I decided on embroidered details for the peas themselves as I didn’t have any safety eyes that were big enough. This also makes it safer for young children as it removes a potential choking hazard.

Recommended Yarn

I used Hobbii Amigo Giga with a 6mm hook for my crochet peas in a pod. Unfortunately, it looks like this yarn is no longer available but, any super bulky yarn should work.

If you’re unsure about substituting yarn, check out yarnsub.com for possible alternatives.

Finished Size

The finished peas in a pod measures approximately 17.25″ long x 6.75″ tall (44cm x 17cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.

For reference my peas measured 7” across after R10 and the pea pod measured 14.5” long after R7.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral using the traditional YO (yarn over) method. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.

Finishing Details

  • Using black yarn, sew the eyes over R12 and R14, 6 sts apart. Each eye is made up of 3 black sts and covers 3 rounds. With light grey or white yarn, add a single st to the outer edge of each eye.
  • Sew the cheeks 1 st away from the side of each eye over R15 and R16.
  • Using black yarn, sew a mouth centred between the eyes over R15.
  • Place both peas inside the pod. Find the centre of each end and pinch together to remove any slack around the peas, use stitch markers to hold in place. Make sure that it’s centred on each side and that the sts are lined up. Using a length of dark green yarn (approximately 40cm), sew in place starting at the tip (see photos below). Make sure you’re sewing the same number of sts on each side. Weave in ends.
