Easy Crochet Shamrock Pattern

I love small seasonal projects that you can make in one sitting with very little materials. This crochet shamrock pattern is quick and easy, perfect for adding handmade charm to your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

This crochet shamrock pattern works up in minutes and is ideal for using scrap yarn. You can make a few while watching a show, waiting at school pick-up or during a quiet evening at home.

About the Pattern

This crochet shamrock pattern is made up of 2 rounds starting with a magic ring.

It’s constructed similarly to my poinsettia ornament pattern where the leaves are crocheted around a foundation of stitches, in this case, slip stitches.

We’ll be working up the side of the chain and down the slip stitches, working into the back loop only and skipping the slip stitch in between each leaf.

Recommended Yarn

You can use any yarn weight and fiber to make your crochet shamrock. I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in Grass Green with a 3.5mm hook and Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Slate Green with a 2.5mm hook for the shamrocks pictured.

Easily resize your crochet shamrock by using different yarn weights and hook sizes.

How to Use Your Crochet Shamrock

  • Appliques – use them to embellish clothing, accessories, blankets, hats and more.
  • Garlands – string them together for a quick and fun St Patrick’s Day garland.
  • Gift toppers – attach to gifts for a sweet handmade touch.
  • Brooches – add a safety pin or brooch back for a quick little accessory.

The finished shamrock measures approximately 2.5″ x 3″ (6.5cm x 8cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.

Notes

  • This pattern uses the traditional YO (yarn over) method.
  • The leaves are worked around a foundation of slip stitches in the back loop only.
  • Skip the slip stitch in the magic ring between leaves.

Pattern Instructions

Shamrock

Make a magic ring.

R1: [Ch 6, sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch across, sl st in magic ring] x3, ch 11, sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch across, sl st in magic ring.

R2: [Working up the side of the ch – sc in next st, hdc in next, dc in next 2 sts, 3 tr in last st, ch 2, sl st in the very tip.

Working down the other side BLO – ch 2, 3 tr in first st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next, sc in last st, sk sl st in ring] x3

Sl st placement in tip.
Sk sl st in magic ring.

Fasten off invisibly to the top of the stem and weave in ends.

Gently stretch and shape each leaf so the shamrock lies flat and even.

Blocking (optional)

Blocking is not strictly necessary for this project but if your shamrock is curling or twisting and gentle stretching doesn’t help, you can block it to flatten it out.

Materials required for blocking:

  • Blocking mat
  • Rust proof pins
  • Spray bottle filled with water

Pin your crochet shamrock to the blocking mat so it lies flat and looks even.

Spray with water until damp and leave to air dry completely.
