Crochet Flower Coaster Pattern

This crochet flower coaster is both practical and pretty. Whether you use them to decorate for spring or add a pop of color to your coffee table, these coasters are as fun to make as they are to use.

Spring is my favourite season. The days are getting warmer and longer, the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing – it’s an instant mood boost.

This crochet flower coaster comes together in just 6 rounds and is great for using up stash yarn. They’re fun and playful and are giving all the spring vibes.

These flower coasters could also be used as over sized appliques, attach them to a bucket hat, tote bag or a pair of jeans for some added colour and flare.

About the Pattern

This crochet flower coaster is worked in joined rounds. The ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch, place the first stitch of the round in the same stitch as joining. This helps to minimise the join.

We’ll begin by making 10 half double crochet in a magic ring and increasing over the next couple of rounds to create a flat circle (the centre of our flower).

The final 3 rounds is when we’ll start using different stitches of varying heights to create the petals.

Recommended Yarn

I always recommend cotton yarn for coasters as it’s durable, absorbent, holds up well to heat and is easy to wash – all the things that you want in a crochet coaster.

For this pattern, I’ve used worsted weight yarn with a 3.5mm hook.

Does this Crochet Flower Coaster Need Blocking?

I did not block my coasters but you are more than welcome to do so. If your coaster is a little misshapen once finished, blocking can help you achieve a crisper shape.

For easy blocking, pin the coaster to shape on a blocking mat, spray with water and let dry.

How to Change Colours in Half Double Crochet

  1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the last stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook.
  3. Drop your working yarn and pick up the new colour.
  4. Draw the new colour through all 3 loops on your hook to finish the stitch.

Finished Size

The finished flower coaster measures approximately 4″ x 4″ (10cm x 10cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item. Use the below measurement as a guide.

Gauge = 1.75″ (4.5cm) across after R3.

Notes

  • The coasters are worked in joined rounds. The ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Join to the first stitch of each round and work the first stitch of the next round in the same stitch as joining.
