It’s no secret that I love quick, practical projects, especially when I’m short on time and motivation. So, when I found these wooden rings in my craft stash, I knew I wanted to make something useful with them.
Crochet towel holders have been around for a long time and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to make one. They’re quick and easy, perfect for using up scrap yarn and make great market sellers and thoughtful gifts.
I love adding texture where I can and the crunch stitch is one of my favourite stitches. It’s simple and creates such a pretty texture.
About the Pattern
This crochet towel hanger is worked in turned rows with the first row being worked around a wooden ring.
It uses a combination of half double crochet and slip stitches and is finished with a simple button and loop closure so it can be attached to a handle or bar.
With basic stitches and minimal ends to weave in, this crochet towel holder makes an easy beginner friendly project.
Recommended Yarn
Cotton is my go-to for projects like this as it’s durable, absorbent and low-maintenance.
For this pattern, I’ve used worsted weight yarn with a 4mm hook.
Adjusting the Size
You can make your crochet towel holder longer or shorter by crocheting more or less rows. If you adjust the number of rows, you may also need to change the length of the chain loop.

Materials
- Worsted weight yarn, approximately 10g (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in Vintage Pink and Soft Fudge for the towel holders pictured)
- 4mm crochet hook
- 2.75″ (7 cm) diameter wooden ring
- 3/4″ (2 cm) button
- Yarn needle, scissors

- ch – chain
- dec – single crochet decrease
- hdc – half double crochet
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch

- (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round
Finished Size
The finished towel holder measures approximately 4.75″ x 2.25″ (12 cm x 5.5 cm) when open, not including the wooden ring or chain loop. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.
Gauge
Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.
Notes
- This pattern is worked in turned rows. The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
- Each row begins with a half double crochet and ends with a slip stitch.
How to Crochet Around a Ring
Place a slip knot on your hook. Position the working yarn and tail end behind the ring. Insert hook through the center of the ring from front to back. Yarn over and pull back through the center (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through both loops, first single crochet made. Continue to single crochet around the ring.
tip
Hold the tail end next to the ring and crochet over it as you go.
Pattern Instructions
Crochet Towel Holder
R1: Starting with a slip knot on your hook, crochet around the wooden ring – [sc] x12 (12)
R2-26: Ch 1, turn. [Hdc, sl st] x6 (12) 25 rows
R27: [Dec] x2, 4 sc, [dec] x2 (8)
R28: Dec, 2 sc, ch 30, sc in next 2 sts back on holder, dec (6 sts + 30 chs)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew a button to the front of the towel holder between R6 and R7, approximately 1″ (2.5 cm) up from the wooden ring.
Fold the holder over a handle or bar, then bring the long chain loop through the centre of the ring and over the button to secure. Slide your towel through the wooden ring.
