Crochet Toy Wagon Ornament Pattern
Add a touch of whimsy to your Christmas decor with this crochet toy wagon ornament.
It’s Day 7 of the 12 Days of Crochet Christmas!
This crochet toy wagon is just the sweetest thing. It’s perfect for displaying on a shelf/mantel or nestled in the tree and of course I had to make it extra festive with little peppermint wheels.
The pattern includes the gift box and the little bear is from last years Santa sack ornament pattern. You could also fill the wagon with little treats.
About the Pattern
There are a few parts to this one but it’s totally worth it.
The base of the wagon is made up of 2 pieces for extra stability and we’ll crochet them together which gives us a nice tidy edge to work the sides off.
The wheels are made up of 2 rounds with frequent colour changes to create little peppermints. I used glue to attach the wheels but you may sew them on if you wish.

Finished Size
The finished toy wagon ornament measures approximately 4″ (10cm) long including the handle. Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.
Gauge
Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.
Notes
- The base of the wagon is worked in turned rows.
- The sides of the wagon are worked in a continuous spiral without joining.
- The wagon handle is worked in the back bump of the chain.
- The wheels and gift box are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring.
- R4 and R8 of the gift box are worked in the back loop and third loop to create a sharper angle. If you find this too difficult you can just crochet into the back loops only.
Identifying the Back Bump of a Chain
If you look at the front of your starting chain you will see the front loop and back loop of your chain stitches. Flip your chain over so you’re looking at the back. You will see a line of stitches running down the center, these are the back bumps of each chain.
Pattern Instructions
Wagon Base (make 2, red)
R1: Ch 11, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across (10)
R2-15: Ch 1, turn. [Sc] x10 (10) 14 rows
Fasten off the first piece, do not fasten off the second piece.
Wagon Continued
R16: Place base pieces wrong sides together and sc evenly around through both layers, working an inc in each of the four corners
Note: The st count doesn’t need to be exact as long as the base lies flat, I ended up with 50 sts after R16.
R17: [BLO sc] x50 (50)
R18-22: [Sc] x50 (50) 5 rounds
Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.
Wagon Handle (black)
Ch 18, sl st in back bump of 8th ch from hook and in each back bump across.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Wagon Wheels (make 4, starting with red)
Each wheel is made by alternating red and white. All colour changes take place in the last yarn over of the previous colour.
Make a magic ring
R1: [Sc red, sc white] x4 (8)
R2: [Inc red, inc white] x4 (16)
Fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.
Assembly
- Sew the handle to the front of the wagon 2 rounds up from the base of the wagon.
- Glue (or sew) the wheels to both sides of the wagon approximately 4 sts apart. Take your time here to make sure that the wheels are even with each other and the wagon sits flat.
