Crochet Toadstool Sweater Keychain Pattern
Looking for a quick and cute crochet project? This crochet toadstool sweater keychain pattern is the perfect little project for using up yarn scraps and getting into the Fall mood.
It’s fun to make and adds a cosy handmade touch to your keys, handbag or backpack.
If you’re anything like me and struggle with gauge and attention span when it comes to making clothing then this pattern is for you. It can be whipped up in a jiffy and no gauge swatch required.
The only slightly tricky part of this project is the toadstool applique and only because it’s so small. Take your time with it and I recommend using a sharp needle when adding the ‘spots’ as it makes it easier to go through the stitches.
About the Pattern
This toadstool sweater keychain pattern is worked from the top down with the sleeves and neckline added at the end.
We will be using both half double crochet stitches and single crochet stitches to make the sweater with the tails from the neckline being used to attach the keychain.
The toadstool is made separately and glued in place. However, I recommend sewing it on if the keychain will be within reach of small children.
Recommended Yarn
I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK with a 2.5mm hook for my toadstool sweater which gives a cute keychain size.
I love using cotton for projects like this as it’s durable, holds its shape well and is easy to care for.

Materials
- DK weight yarn in your choice of colour for the sweater, and a small amount of red and white (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Mustard Yellow/Soft Fudge, Pillar Red and Paper White for the sweaters featured)
- 4 ply yarn in white or white embroidery floss
- 2.5mm crochet hook
- Fabric glue
- Keychain (I used a 1″ keychain ring with a 1.25″ chain)
- Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- hdc-inc – half double crochet increase
- hdc-dec – half double crochet decrease
- sc – single crochet
- sk – skip
- sl st – slip stitch
- st/s – stitch/es
- […] – repeat the instructions in brackets
- (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round

Finished Size
The finished keychain measures approximately 2″ x 3.5″ (5 cm x 9 cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.
Gauge
Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.
Notes
- The body of the sweater is worked in joined rounds from the top down. The sleeves are added at the end and are worked in a continuous spiral without joining.
- The ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
Pattern Instructions
Sweater Body
R1: Ch 16, sl st to first ch without twisting
R2: Ch1, sc in same ch and in each ch around, sl st to first sc to join (16)
R3: Ch 1, [hdc-inc] x16, sl st to first hdc to join (32)
R4-5: Ch 1, [hdc] x32, sl st to first hdc to join (32) 2 rounds
R6: Ch 1, 5 hdc, sk 6, 10 hdc, sk 6, 5 hdc, sl st to first hdc to join (20)
R7-9: Ch 1, [hdc] x20, sl st to first hdc to join (20) 3 rounds
R10: Ch 1, [sc] x20 (20)
Fasten off invisibly to the first sc and weave in ends.
Sleeves
The sleeves are worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join at the end of each round.
LEFT SLEEVE
Join yarn to the first skipped st from R6 of the body by inserting your hook and pulling up a loop of yarn.
R1: Ch 1, sc in same st, [sc] x5. Sc in both corner sts on the front and back of the sweater body (8) – see images below.
R2-7: [Sc] x8 (8) 6 rounds
Fasten off invisibly and weave in end.
RIGHT SLEEVE
Join yarn to the last skipped stitch from R6 of the body by inserting your hook and pulling up a loop of yarn.
R1: Ch 1, sc in same st and both corner sts on the front and back of the sweater body, [sc] x5 (8)
R2-7: [Sc] x8 (8) 6 rounds
Fasten off invisibly and weave in end.
Neckline
Leaving a longer starting tail for attaching the keychain (approximately 4″/10 cm), join yarn in the centre st at the back of the neck by inserting your hook and pulling up a loop of yarn.
Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc-dec, [2 hdc, hdc-dec] x3, hdc (12)
Fasten off invisibly to the first half double crochet leaving a long tail of approximately 4″/10 cm. Use the leftover yarn tails to attach the keychain. Weave in ends.
Toadstool (starting with red)
R1: 5 sc in magic ring (5)
R2: Ch 1, turn. [Inc] x 5 (10)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join white yarn to the centre of the magic ring at the bottom of the toadstool (straight side) by inserting your hook and pulling up a loop of yarn.
Ch 2, dc in same space.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Using 4 ply white yarn or white embroidery floss, make small stitches on the toadstool for the spots.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Glue or sew the toadstool to the front of the sweater. The bottom of the toadstool should sit 3 rounds up from the bottom of the sweater.
