Are you getting into the Christmas spirit yet? This year has been such a strange one in so many ways and I’m all for spoiling myself a little extra and if that means putting up the tree early and crocheting all the Christmas things then I’m all for it.

I love adding a touch of handmade to my Christmas decor. There’s something so special about handmade ornaments and they bring back so many good memories when we get them out each year. It’s also a fun look at my crochet journey and seeing how much I’ve improved over time.

Christmas Bear Ornament Pattern

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in brown, beige and red (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Soft Fudge, Light Caramel and Pillar Red)
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • 6mm safety eyes
  • Polyester Fiberfill
  • Black embroidery floss
  • Yarn, ribbon, string or twine for the hanging loop
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • inc – increase
  • invdec – invisible decrease
  • BLO – back loop only
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets

Finished Size

The finished ornament measures approximately 2″ x 2″ (5cm x 5cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.

Notes

  • Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.
  • R15 of the head is worked in the back loop only.

Head (brown)

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)

R2: [Inc] x6 (12)

R3: [Sc,inc] x6 (18)

R4: Sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x5, sc (24)

R5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)

R6: 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x5, 2 sc (36)

R7-12: [Sc] x36 (36) 6 rounds

R13: 2 sc, invdec, [4 sc, invdec] x5, 2 sc (30)

R14: [3 sc, invdec] x6 (24)

Insert safety eyes between R7 and R8, 5 stitches apart.

R15 is worked in the back loop only.

R15: BLO sc, invdec, [2 sc, invdec] x5, sc (18)

Start stuffing and continue to stuff as you go.

R16: [Sc, invdec] x6 (12)

R17: [Invdec] x6 (6)

Cut the yarn leaving a tail and pull through last st. Weave the yarn tail through the front loops only of the final round and pull to close. Hide the end inside the bear.

Ruffle (red)

Join yarn in first leftover front loop from R15.

R1: Ch 2, 4 dc in same stitch, [5 dc] in each st around.

Join with sl st to beginning ch.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Muzzle (beige)

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)

R2: [Inc] x6 (12)

Fasten off invisibly leaving a long tail for sewing.

Embroider nose and sew to the head over R8 and R11.

Ears (make 2, brown)

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew ears to either side of the head 3 rounds from the center on either side

Sew or fasten a hanging loop to the top of the head.

  1. Should round 15 on the head be all BLO sc? I finished the head and went to do the ruffle. I can attach it to the one BLO sc but I’m unsure how I’m supposed to crochet into the other stitches since they were regular sc?
