Rainbow Coaster Crochet Pattern

Brighten up your coffee table with this fun rainbow coaster crochet pattern.

There’s just something about rainbows that make me smile. I tend to be very traditional with my colour choices but feel free to get creative. I can’t wait to see what colour combos you come up with!

Rainbow Coaster Crochet Pattern

Materials

  • DK weight cotton yarn in 4 different colours
    (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Sky Blue, Lime Green, Buttercup Yellow and Pillar Red)
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • hdc-inc – half double crochet increase
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets

How to Change Colours in Half Double Crochet at the End of a Row

Yarn over and insert your hook into the last stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook. Drop your working yarn and pick up the new colour. Draw the new colour through all 3 loops on your hook to finish the stitch.

Finished Size

The finished coaster measures approximately 3.5″ wide x 4.5″ tall (9cm x 11cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size of the finished item.

Notes

  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch. Pull the chains tight for a neater bottom edge.
  • The border round is worked with the wrong side facing you.
  • Colour changes take place in the last stitch of the round as described below:

Rainbow

Tip: Crochet over your ends where possible.

R1: Ch 10, hdc in third ch from hook and next 6 chs, 5 hdc in last ch. Working on other side of ch, 8 hdc (20)

R2: Ch 2, turn. 8 hdc, [hdc-inc] x5, 7 hdc (25) – change colour in last st

R3: Ch 2, turn. 8 hdc, hdc-inc, [hdc, hdc-inc] x4, 8 hdc (30)

R4: Ch 2, turn. 9 hdc, hdc-inc, [2 hdc, hdc-inc] x4, 8 hdc (35) – change colour in last st

R5: Ch 2, turn. 10 hdc, hdc-inc, [3 hdc, hdc-inc] x4, 8 hdc (40)

R6: Ch 2, turn. 10 hdc, hdc-inc, [4 hdc, hdc-inc] x4, 9 hdc (45) – change colour in last st

R7: Ch 2, turn. 12 hdc, hdc-inc, [5 hdc, hdc-inc] x4, 8 hdc (50)

R8: Ch 2, turn. 11 hdc, hdc-inc, [6 hdc, hdc-inc] x4, 10 hdc (55)

Border

Ch 1, turn. [Dc in first st, sl st in next] x 27. Dc in last st, ch 1, sl st in same st (56)

Fasten off and weave in ends.
