Continuous Crochet Granny Square Pattern

This continuous crochet granny square is the perfect project for when you want to keep your hands and mind busy. The repetitive pattern and basic stitches allow you to mindlessly crochet your worries away.

Granny squares have been around for a long time and there are many variations of them. We’re not reinventing the wheel but everyone has a slightly different way of doing things so I thought I’d share my take on the classic granny square.

There are two main differences in this pattern:

  1. I use the stacking single crochet stitch instead of a chain at the beginning of each round as it gives a much neater finish and a seamless join.
  2. I turn my granny square after each round to prevent twisting.

How Do You Keep a Continuous Granny Square Straight?

If you’ve ever tried crocheting a continuous granny square before, you may have noticed that as your square gets larger it has a tendency to twist. This is because crochet stitches have a slight lean to them which becomes more pronounced the bigger the square gets.

Luckily there’s an easy fix… turning after every round. By turning at the end of each round, the ‘lean’ doesn’t go in the same direction which means no more twisting.

Recommended Yarn

You can use any yarn weight and fiber to make your continuous crochet granny square. I used Caron Blossom Cakes in Radiant Rainbow with a 6mm hook for the square pictured. By using a variegated yarn, we get a beautiful square without changing colours.

If you want your square to be more structured and less holey try dropping a hook size. If you want it to be more open and lacy try increasing your hook size.

Why You’ll Love This Continuous Crochet Granny Square Pattern

  • Versatile: Use it to make blankets, cushion covers or book sleeves.
  • Crochet cruise control: Doesn’t require much focus.
  • Timeless: A classic stitch that never goes out of style.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn (I used Caron Blossom Cakes in Radiant Rainbow)
  • 6mm crochet hook

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • stsc – stacked single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets
  • (…) – all stitches are worked in the same space
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round

Special Stitches

Stacked Single Crochet Stitch (stsc)

  1. Turn your work. Without chaining make a single crochet in the very first stitch.
  2. Insert your hook through the left vertical bar of the single crochet stitch. Yarn over and pull through (2 loops on hook).
  3. Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook to complete the stacked single crochet stitch.

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this pattern. However, using a different yarn and hook size will change the size and look of the finished item.

Notes

  • The stacked single crochet stitch at the beginning of each round counts as the first double crochet.
  • Slip st at the end of each round under both top loops of the stacked single crochet stitch to join.
  • Turn after each round.
  • In each corner space – 3dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  • In each space between clusters along the sides – 3 dc

Pattern Instructions

Continuous Granny Square

Make a magic circle.

R1: Stsc, 2 dc, ch 2, [3 dc, ch 2] x3 in magic circle, sl st to stsc (4 groups of 3 dc)

Tip: After each stsc, gently pull it over to cover the slip stitch join.

R2: Turn. Stsc into the first ch-2 space directly below your hook, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in the same ch-2 space, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next ch-2 space] x3, sl st to stsc (8 groups of 3 dc)

R3: Turn. Stsc into the space between the 3dc cluster directly below your hook, 2 dc in the same space, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-2 space, [(3 dc between the 3dc cluster on the side, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-2 space] x3, sl st to stsc (12 groups of 3 dc)

R4: Turn. Stsc into the space between the 3-dc cluster directly below your hook, 2 dc in the same space, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-2 space, [(3 dc between each 3-dc cluster on the side, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-2 space] x3, 3 dc between the next 3-dc cluster on the side, sl st to stsc (16 groups of 3 dc)

Once you have the hang of the pattern, it’s as simple as placing (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each ch 2 space and 3 dc between each 3-dc cluster along the sides.

Continue in this way until your granny square reaches your desired size.

Changing Colours

You can change colour at the beginning of any new round.

Fasten off invisibly with the old colour to the stsc at the start of the round.

Join the new colour in the same space you would have started the new round in with a standing single crochet (this is the first half of the stsc), complete the stsc.

Continuous Granny Square Blanket

If you’re making this as a blanket consider finishing it off with a decorative border.
