How To: Standing Double Crochet Tutorial
The standing double crochet stitch allows you to join new yarn to your project without the need for a starting chain.

Typically you would join your yarn with a slip stitch and chain up to the height of the new row/round but with the standing double crochet, you start right from the first stitch.
Why Use the Standing Double Crochet?
Eliminating the starting chain at the beginning of a row/round creates a seamless transition without any unsightly gaps. This can be particularly useful when starting a new row/round with a different colour.

Note: I prefer to start my standing double crochet with a slip knot as it gives me more control over the loops on my hook. However, this is not strictly necessary and can be eliminated by wrapping the yarn around your hook twice.
- Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
- Yarn over with the working yarn. Use your finger to prevent the loops from moving around too much.
- Insert your hook into the indicated stitch.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook).
- Yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops on your hook to complete the stitch.
