Little Ghost Crochet Pattern
Get spooky with this sweet little ghost crochet pattern!
I love all things Halloween even though it’s not really celebrated here and despite my love of horror movies, I definitely lean more towards spooky cute when it comes to my creations.
This little ghost crochet pattern is worked all in one piece from the top down and the only sewing required is for attaching his little pumpkin hat.
Add a keychain and it would make a fun Halloween gift for kids to give to their friends.

Materials
- DK weight yarn in white, orange and dark brown (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Paper White, Blood Orange and Coffee Bean)
- 2.5mm crochet hook
- 9mm safety eyes
- Polyester fiberfill
- Black embroidery floss
- Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- inc – single crochet increase
- dec – decrease
- invdec – invisible decrease
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- FLO – front loop only
- sl st – slip stitch
- st/s – stitch/es
- (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round
- […] – repeat the instructions in brackets

Finished Size
The finished ghost measures approximately 2.5″ x 2″ (6.5cm x 5cm) when using the materials listed.
Gauge
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.
Notes
- Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.
- R18 and R19 are both worked in the back loop only.

Ghost (white)
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: [Inc] x6 (12)
R3: [Sc, inc] x6 (18)
R4: Sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x5, sc (24)
R5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)
R6: 2 sc, inc. [4 sc, inc] x5, 2 sc (36)
R7-17: [Sc] x36 (36)
Insert safety eyes between R10 and R11, 5 sts apart.
R18: BLO [sc] x36 (36)
R19: BLO 2 sc, dec, [4 sc, dec] x5, 2 sc (30)
R20: [3 sc, invdec] x6 (24)
R21: Sc, invdec, [2 sc, invdec] x5, sc (18)
Start stuffing and continue to stuff as you go.
R22: [Sc. invdec] x6 (12)
R23: [Invdec] x6 (6)
Cut the yarn leaving a tail and pull through last st. Weave the yarn tail through the front loops only of the final round and pull to close. Hide the end inside the ghost.
Finishing
Join white yarn in first leftover front loop from R18 of the ghost.
Ch 1, sc in same st. [Hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc] x5, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc (36)
Fasten off invisibly and weave in end.
Pumpkin Hat (orange)
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: [Inc] x6 (12)
R3: [Sc, inc] x6 (18)
R4: Sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x5, sc (24)
R5: FLO [sl st] x24 (24)
Fasten off invisibly leaving a long tail for sewing.
Stem (dark brown)
Ch 4
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold chain in half and attach to the top of the hat.
Assembly
- Sew pumpkin hat to the top of the head at an angle using the leftover back loops from R5.
- Using a single strand of embroidery floss, sew a mouth centred between the eyes of R12.

Hi! Such a cute ghost. I appreciate the free pattern. I’m confused though and wondered if you could help me. I did 36 sc in rounds 7-17 but the next step says row 8. Wasn’t row 8 in the SC rounds? Sorry if this is an obvious answer. I just learned to crochet a few months ago.

Hi! In R18 of the ghost you should have worked into the back loops only. This leaves the front loops free which is where you will join the yarn and crochet the final step into. Hope that helps x
I finished the ghost .. I’m confused about the last row that starts join ch1 .. am I adding that to the ghost .. is that what makes the ruffled part ?
Yes, you should have a round of front loops leftover from R18 which you will work into to create the ruffle at the bottom.
In Row 19, does BLO apply to his the first 2 sc or does it apply to every stitch in that round? I am new to crochet. Thank you!

Yes, that should work.
I made my first ghost with beginner yarn because I had never done anything so small before. I used the exact stitch count and it came out great, including the hat. I would say, “Go for it!”. I love this pattern and have now made a small ghost too.
