Birthday Cupcake Crochet Pattern

Crochet cupcake with a heart topper against a white background.

It’s birthday time here on the blog and it wouldn’t be a celebration without cupcakes so here’s a fun birthday cupcake crochet pattern.

I can’t believe that it’s been a whole year since I took that leap of faith and started my blogging adventure – what a ride it has been! A huge thank you to everyone who’s stuck with me, for all the kind words and support as I figure this thing out. And it wouldn’t be a celebration without cupcakes so I have a fun pattern for you. I’d love to see you get creative with it – what flavour will you make?

The cupcake is worked in one piece from the bottom up. I chose to keep my toppings simple with some white frosting and a heart topper. It would make a great addition to a play kitchen (without the topper) or a sweet gift.

MATERIALS

(Contains Affiliate Links)

  • DK Weight Yarn in 4 colours – for the case, cupcake, frosting and heart (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Daffodil Yellow, Soft Fudge, Paper White and Pillar Red)
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Cardboard (a piece of an old cereal box is perfect)
  • Toothpick
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors

STITCHES/ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase
  • invdec – invisible decrease
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FLO – front loop only
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es

NOTES

The pattern is written using US terminology and measures approximately 4.5″ (11.5cm) tall including the heart topper, when using the materials listed.

Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.

The cupcake is worked in one piece from the bottom up without joining.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Use a hook size to match your chosen yarn. Make sure that your stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing showing through and adjust hook size if necessary.
